Proverbs 1:5

5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

et the wise listen

Wise counsel refers to advice that aligns with God's principles and purposes. In the historical context, kings and leaders often sought counsel from prophets and wise men (2 Samuel 16:23). This phrase underscores the importance of seeking guidance from those who are spiritually mature and grounded in biblical truth, reflecting the communal aspect of wisdom in the biblical narrative.

Proverbs 1:1-4

 

1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;

2 To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;

3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;

4 To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

What do these four verses mean? Take a look:

1: “The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel:”

This verse tells us who wrote the book. Solomon, known as the wisest man in history, is the primary author of Proverbs.

2: “For gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight;”
The purpose of these proverbs is to teach wisdom and help us understand life better. It’s about learning how to live well and make good decisions.

3: “For receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair;”
Wisdom helps us develop good character and learn how to live in a way that’s fair, just, and upright.

4: “For giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young—”
This verse reminds us that wisdom is for everyone, regardless of age or experience. Even those who are inexperienced can gain practical knowledge and good judgment.

Proverbs 1:1-33

1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel;

2 To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding;

3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity;

4 To give subtilty to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion.

5 A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels:

6 To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

8 My son, hear the instruction of thy father, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

9 For they shall be an ornament of grace unto thy head, and chains about thy neck.

10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not.

11 If they say, Come with us, let us lay wait for blood, let us lurk privily for the innocent without cause:

12 Let us swallow them up alive as the grave; and whole, as those that go down into the pit:

13 We shall find all precious substance, we shall fill our houses with spoil:

14 Cast in thy lot among us; let us all have one purse:

15 My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:

16 For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.

17 Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.

18 And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.

19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.

20 Wisdom crieth without; she uttereth her voice in the streets:

21 She crieth in the chief place of concourse, in the openings of the gates: in the city she uttereth her words, saying,

22 How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge?

23 Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.

24 Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;

25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:

26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;

27 When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.

28 Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me:

29 For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the Lord:

30 They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.

31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way and be filled with their own devices.

32 For the turning away of the simple shall slay them, and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them.

33 But whoso hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely and shall be quiet from fear of evil.

Hello Friends. Starting tomorrow,4/24 I will attempt to begin to learn and understand this chapter in Proverbs. As I did in James, we will look at 2 or 3 verses at a time.

James 1:25-27

 25 But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty, and continues therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed.

26 If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.

27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.

For those believers that look to God's perfect law, can be blessed doing it because it brings freedom to us.

We should not consider ourselves to be "religious" if we do not control our tongues.

Lastly, we should be compassionate towards the fatherless, and widows and keep ourselves pure before God.

These last 3 verses in James 1 conclude that chapter.

I will be starting something new on Wednesday of this week I am not sure what yet. 

It may be more of the way I have been studying scripture or something else. 

I am going to be praying about it in the next couple of days to see where God leads me with it.

He Is Risen!

 

From somewhere beneath the earth, came a rumble. An earthquake so great was only the beginning of that wonderful morning, when the Son of God, would prove to the world that no tomb could hold him.

Did Jesus calmy get up and exit the dark place that had He had been placed in, just three short days ago?

No, I don't believe so. I imagine that He burst forth from that place just as mighty as the earthquake itself had in that few moments before. For it was the victory of the Saviour who had shed His blood, and he was about to show it to the world!

It had been such a sight that even the soldiers that were outside guarding the tomb, "did shake and become as dead men" the bible says. 

Jesus had just done the possible. He had justified his own death in the sight of His Father. And to a sin ridden world.

The horribly bloody cross had now become an object of beauty. Jesus had allowed His blood to turn around the events of the days before, to show us what it really had meant. 

How good is God?

He had so loved the world,

That He gave His only begotten Son,

that whosoever believeth on Him,

should not perish,

but have everlasting Life.

John 3:16

That is how Great God is. And today, as we celebrate this truth of the gospel, we can be all so thankful that we are a part of it.

Even thousands of years later.

Holy Saturday: Day 6

 

In reading scripture about this time in the life of Jesus, there had been a lot of activity going on during Holy Week. And so we get down to Saturday, the day before he came forth out of His grave to prove that indeed He was the Son of God.

And so what happened that day?

Well, it doesn't seem like, according to scripture there was much that did happen. However, Mathew 27:62-66 does give us a glimpse into that day. Read on:

62 Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,

63 Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.

64 Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.

65 Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.

66 So they went, and made the sepulcher sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

 And gotquestions.org does give us more about Holy Saturday to think on. Here is what they have to say about it: 

Holy Saturday is the name given to the day between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. Some Christians recognize Holy Saturday, the seventh day of Holy Week, as the day on which Jesus “rested” from His work of providing salvation. As Jesus died, He called out, “It is finished!” There was no further price to pay; sin had been atoned for.

After His crucifixion, Jesus was laid in a nearby tomb, and His body remained there the entirety of Holy Saturday (Matthew 27:59-60; Mark 15:46; Luke 23:53-54; John 19:39-42). Churches that celebrate Holy Saturday traditionally do so by observing a day of somber reflection as they contemplate the world of darkness that would exist without the hope of Christ’s resurrection.

Indeed, without the resurrection of Christ, we would be in dire straits. If Christ had never been raised, “your faith is futile; you are still in your sins” (1 Corinthians 15:17). The disciples had scattered when Jesus was arrested (Mark 14:50), and they spent the first Holy Saturday hiding for fear of also being arrested (John 20:19). The day between Christ’s crucifixion and His resurrection would have been a time of grief and shock as the stunned disciples tried to understand the murder of Jesus, the betrayal of Judas, and the dashing of their hopes.

The only biblical reference to what happened on Holy Saturday is found in Matthew 27:62-66. After sundown on Friday—the day of Preparation—the chief priests and Pharisees visited Pontius Pilate. This visit was on the Sabbath, since the Jews reckoned a day as starting at sundown. They asked Pilate for a guard for Jesus’ tomb. They remembered Jesus saying that He would rise again in three days (John 2:19-21) and wanted to do everything they could to prevent that. As we know, the Roman guards were inadequate to prevent the resurrection, and the women who returned to the tomb Sunday morning found it empty. The Lord had risen.

Jesus. Crucified. Buried. and now what? Laying in a tomb while guards watched over it to make sure his body could not be stolen. They had no idea what was coming.

And where were the friends of Jesus? Hiding. Because they were afraid, they would be next? 

None of them knew what was coming. They had no clue.

Thankfully, you and I can look back and see the things that did happen. And we can believe and be thankful that Jesus, God's Son would die for the sin of the world, that we might gain from it eternal life.
