6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.
7 The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe.
8 He was not that Light but was sent to bear witness of that Light.
John the Baptist played an important part in bearing witness to the fact that his cousin Jesus was the One came as the Light of the World. He was appointed by God to let us know this so that we can believe in The Light.
It was a dark world back in that day. And even though it is still a dark world now, the wonderful thing about it is that we ourselves do not have to live or walk in darkness.
12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
The life, death and resurrection that brought Jesus to earth proved that and given to John the Baptist as a witness of who Jesus was and still is.
