Background

Hannah was one of two wives of Elkanah, a man from the hill country of Ephraim. While Elkanah's other wife, Peninnah, had many children, Hannah was unable to conceive, which caused her great distress. In the cultural context of the time, having children was highly valued, and Hannah faced ridicule and provocation from Peninnah, who taunted her about her barrenness.

Hannah's Prayer

In her anguish, Hannah went to the temple at Shiloh to pray. She poured out her heart to God, vowing that if He granted her a son, she would dedicate him to the Lord's service for his entire life. Her prayer was so intense that the priest Eli initially thought she was drunk. When she explained her situation, Eli blessed her, and she left the temple with renewed hope.

Answered Prayer and Birth of Samuel

God heard Hannah's prayer, and she eventually gave birth to a son named Samuel. True to her vow, she dedicated Samuel to the Lord's service once he was weaned, bringing him to the temple to serve under Eli. Hannah's prayer of thanksgiving is recorded in 1 Samuel 2:1-10, where she praises God for His faithfulness and mercy.

Sadly many women never conceive a child in their lifetime.

But Hanna knew God.

And she believed He would answer her prayers for one.

And He did.

But before that, she had experienced

a lot of anxiety.

Bitterness

Jealousy

Anger

All the emotions that you and I have experienced 

at one time or another.

But at the same time,

she held onto hope.

Hope that God would

answer her heart's desire.

And He did.

When things get tough,

and it doesn't seem that

anything is getting

worked out on our behalf,

we should remember Hanna.

And know that He is.

We just haven't seen it yet.
