4 Warnings About AI/Ethical Risk/Part Two

Ethical Risk

If AI is to be used in counseling, it requires strong human oversight. Because clients’ personal data is private and sensitive, that information needs to be protected. Counselors should have training in proper storage practices. Paid versions are more likely than free versions to have better storage protection and protocols.

Another area of risk is safety. For example, some counselors are recording sessions and having AI complete the progress note. One safety concern here is that AI has been known to “hallucinate,” a risk the counselor may not be aware of unless they always review the notes. An AI hallucination is a statement that sounds confident but is false, fabricated, unsupported, or misleading.

Client safety is paramount. When working with a suicidal client, AI may have the knowledge of what to say in that situation but would have difficulty understanding human inflection and tone of voice. It may simply encourage the client to go for a walk or read a book to take their mind off of it because it does not fully understand the gravity of the situation. That same AI can also help someone plan a suicide attempt.

Accountability is key regarding ethical risk when using AI. Clients need to be informed and give their consent to the use of AI in counseling. Counselors remain responsible for anything AI says or writes.

Revelation 19:17-18

17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;

18 That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.

Revelation 19:17–18 describes an angel calling the birds of the sky to gather for “the great supper of God,” symbolizing God’s judgment as they consume the flesh of kings, captains, mighty men, and all who oppose Him.
