I think the most heartwarming stories of miracles come to us with those happening to children. At least for me, they are. God calls children a gift.(Psalm 127:3) And while I was a mother raising our own children, I don't think I appreciated them as much as I should have while dealing with the business of life during those years. And that makes me sad.
It was not until the year 2009 when my fourth grandchild was born that I actually realized what a gift children are. Why with the birth of the fourth child, you might ask?
Well, the first three were born in other states and so because of the distance, it made it very hard to get to know them. And so, this one was sooo special, as are this two brothers that came along later. And I love them all so much!
Don't get me wrong, I love all my grandchildren. However, these three were and still are a part of my heart that will always be there no matter what goes on in my life.
I have been seeing through the past few months during the holidays the commercials on tv about Shriners Hospital and St Jude Hospital for Children. And seeing those children make me grateful that my own children and grand children have not had to fight for their lives just to be able to be at home living a cancer free life.
Eaton Rapids girl, 4, who beat cancer twice is Sparrow Hospital's 2021 miracle child
Delilah Steiner-Zehender was first diagnosed with neuroblastoma in 2016 at 4 months old, according to Sparrow Hospital, who has named her the hospital's miracle child for 2021.
She underwent three rounds of chemotherapy and was in remission for more than two years. But in January 2020, the neuroblastoma reappeared.
It was more extensive this time, her mother, Leni Steiner-Zehender, said, and she went through five rounds of chemotherapy and had surgery to remove the tumor and her adrenal gland.
She's now cancer-free again.Steiner-Zehender said battling Delilah's cancer has been “very humbling, stressful, joyful at times, devastating at times. A whole range of emotions went with it.”
She said the family is "honored and excited" for Delilah to be named the miracle child. She has no doubt her daughter deserves it.
"She's done pretty amazing with it," she said. "Of course she had her bad days, but she's really kept a good attitude throughout it all as much as she could."
Steiner-Zehender said she was amazed at how supportive everyone surrounding her was, whether it be friends, family, coworkers or strangers.
"The support and outpouring of love was pretty overwhelming," she said. "It made a really hard thing a lot more bearable."
As the hospital's miracle child, Delilah will be the face of the Sparrow Children's Center for 2021.

Indeed children are our gifts from God. To the world. To our communities. To us. And thank God that when one gets ill, and perhaps are taken from us by God, we can have hope of a miracle or know that God needs him or her more than we do.
Thanks for coming by today, Friends. And thank you for your patience with me, this week. Have a wonderful, blessed day!
