John's Account of the Death and Resurrection of Jesus (part 4)

Mary Magdalene is one of the best-known characters in the New Testament, yet we know surprisingly little about her. . . . The primacy of her name in these accounts, the frequency of her mention, and her role on the morning of the Resurrection suggest that she was a prominent and respected disciple in the first century.

Through the eyes of John 20

Bodies that were crucified were not to remain on the cross on the Sabbath and so the Jews asked Pilate to have their legs broken and their bodies taken away. And so the soldiers did break their legs, first the two beside Jesus, and then Jesus last. But when they got to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead. And so they didn't break his legs. Instead a soldier with a spear pierced his side and blood and water came out. And they saw that scripture had been fulfilled that not of bone of his would be broken, but they looked on him that was pierced.

After this, Joseph of Arimathaea got permission from Pilate to take the body of Jesus away. He was a disciple of Jesus, secretly because he feared the Jews. He took the body and Nicodemus also came and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes about a 100 pounds in weight. And so they wound Jesus body in linen with the spices

On the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene went to the sepulchre and found that the stone was rolled away from it. So she ran and found Peter and the other disciple who Jesus loved and told them they had taken the Lord out of the sepulchre and they didn't know where they laid him. And so they all ran back to the sepulchre and the other disciple had outrun Peter and got there first. He saw the linen clothes laying there but did not go in.

When Peter got there he did go in and saw the linen clothes laying there, but the napkin that had been around Jesus' head was not laying with them, but was "wrapped together in a place by itself." Then the other disciple that had gotten there first went in and saw for himself and believed.

"For as yet they knew not the scripture that he must rise again from the dead." And the disciples left and went to their own home.

But Mary stood outside of the sepulchre weeping and she stooped down looking into the sepulchre and she saw two angels sitting, one at the head and the other at the feet of where Jesus had laid. And they asked her why she was weeping. She told them that they have taken Jesus away and she did not know where they had taken him. And when she had said this, she turned and saw Jesus standing there, but did not recognize him.

He asked her why was she weeping and who was she looking for.

She thought he was the gardener and she asked him to tell her why he was and she would take him away.

Then Jesus said to her "Mary." And she turned to him and called him, "Master."

Jesus told her to not touch him for he had not yet gone to his Father but go to his brethren and tell them, "I ascend to my Father and to your Father and to my God, and your God."

Mary Magdalene went and told them that she had seen the Lord and told them what he had said to tell them. And that same evening, the doors were shut where the disciples were gathered, for fear of the Jews and Jesus came to them and said, "Peace be unto you." And he showed them his hands and side and they were glad they were with the Lord.  Jesus said again, "Peace be unto you. As my Father has sent me, so I send you." And when he said this, he breathed on them and said, "Receive ye, the Holy Ghost.Whoever sins you remit, they are remitted unto them; and whosoever sins ye retain, they are retained."

Now Thomas was not with the others that evening. When they had told him that they had seen the Lord, he told them that unless he saw the nail prints in his hands and put his fingers in the prints and his hand in his side, he would not believe it was Jesus.

Eight days later, they were all together behind the closed doors and suddenly Jesus was there again and said, "Peace be unto you." And he told Thomas to put his fingers in the nail prints and his hand in his side, and told him to not to be faithless but to be believing. And Thomas said, "My Lord, and my God."

Jesus said, Thomas, because you have seen me you have believed. Blessed are they that have not seen me, but have believed."

"Many are the signs truly did Jesus, in the presence of his disciples that are not written in this book. But these are written that you might believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and that believing, you might have life through his name."

Hello Friends. While John ends his account at the end of this chapter, the account of what happens next so far as Jesus is concerned, goes on into Acts 1. Come back next time for that. In the mean time, have a really blessed day!
