Today is St.Patricks Day and there will be much celebrating all over this country and other parts of the world as well. But I am not speaking of the color green in relationship to the clothes we wear. But instead of the green, we see when we want something that someone else has. Be it money, material
things or someone's husband or wife that we would like to have.
The Bible is very clear that we are not to covet
According to the Wikipedia dictionary: "You shall not covet" means that we should banish our desires for whatever does not belong to us. Never having enough money is regarded as a symptom of the love of money. Obedience to the tenth commandment requires that envy be banished from the human heart.
More specifically God says in Exodus 20:17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male or female servant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”
Ok, so most of us do not have oxen or donkeys. But clearly, those were worth something in Bible days As they still are today and as we know there is plenty of coveting that goes on in this day an age. From money to material goods and to someone else's husband or wife.
Sometimes, it is hard not to be jealous when someone has something that we want. But our source for what we need and want is not from what someone has but from God himself.
Mathew 6:33-But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Psalms 37:4-Delight thyself also in the Lord: and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
If we truly live by his word, then we don't have to be jealous of anything because God will give us what we need. And even the things we most desire.
So if you have your green of envy on, take it off. It does not look good on you. And it can be nasty and cause us to do things that we might otherwise not do. Instead put on the Lord's robe of righteousness (Isiah 61:10) because doing that is obedience to him and jealousy cannot exist in us.
