People were bringing little children to Jesus for him to place his hands on them, but the disciples rebuked them. 14 When Jesus saw this, he was indignant. He said to them, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.15 Truly I tell you, anyone, who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” 16 And he took the children in his arms, placed his hands on them and blessed them. Mathew 10:13-16
Jesus loves the little children. All the children of the world
Red and yellow, black and white,
they are precious in his sight,
Jesus Loves the little children of the world.
This little song, sung ages ago in my Sunday School class, reminds us that Jesus loves all children. No matter what color or race. Maybe it is why I was never racist but could accept all other children as my friends. As a child, I could identify with it and I continue to do so even so, some 50 plus years later.
In years past, children were "to be seen and not heard." Their presence when attending a reunion of family members were to wait until the adults got their food before the children were to get theirs.
I don't know if that was how it was in your family, but it was many years ago in my own.
However, in the passage in Mark, parents were bringing their children to Jesus who was taking them into his arms to bless them. And he was rebuked by his disciples. Jesus knew the significance of the little ones in his kingdom. He loved them. And why not. God creates each child that is born into our world. Why would he choose to send them away as if they aren't important?
Children when they are young, believe what they are told. For them to believe in Jesus comes naturally especially if taught by their parents. They trust what their parents tell them. I found this out one day when my third child was about 3 years old.
We had gone to our local grocery store that day. It was very hot and humid out but right outside of the entrance of the store was a huge tub of watermelons in ice cold water. Danny asked me, "Mommy why are those watermelons in there?" I told him that they were taking a bath. I will never forget it at the time when I realized he accepted that explanation as the truth when actually since it was a hot day, there would be people that would like to take home an ice cold mellon to enjoy. And how important it is that parents tell their children the truth. It was as a light bulb that had gone off in my head that day. (Ok, so I am a slow learner. lol)
To accept Jesus as our personal Savior we must have that trusting faith that we had had as a child. We are all born in to sin, the Bible makes no mistake about it. And it is hard for some people to understand as they get older how it is that we need a Savior and what it means to be born again. Nicodemus asked Jesus how a man could be born again when he is old. Jesus told him that as human we birth flesh, but it is the spirit that births spirit. John 3:3-5 So it is not our flesh that is born again but our spirit and who other can redeem our spirit but God alone.
Children are so vulnerable. They need our help and protection to mature and grow. And yet they are eager to learn and even though they are not sinless, they want us as their teachers, to be honest, and loving so that they can trust us. Just as we can trust Jesus. It is this correlation between the 2 that offers us a place in heaven.
We should never turn away from any child that needs us, just as Jesus does not turn away from us as we trust in him and become his children. And just like him we should be always ready to take them back into our fold, just like he does when we leave him. Thank God he is so willing to do this for us because he loves us.
