Luke 15:11-32
Have you ever had a son or daughter that ran away? Have you ever had one that was like the Prodigal Son? Where they wanted to go and do whatever it was they wanted? Have you ever had an adult child with who you have become estranged with at some point?
If not, can you imagine how the son's father must have felt?
Why had his son wanted to leave his home? Was he tired of living under his father's roof? Why had he insisted on his share of his father's wealth that he was not even entitled to yet? What was he doing out there all alone? Where was he? What had he done that made his son want to leave?
I am sure these thoughts, or some like them and probably many more ran through dad's mind as he pondered what his son might be doing.
In the meantime what was his father doing during the time he was away? Was he mad and upset? Was he worried about him? Did he even care?
The Bible tells in Luke 15:20-22 that the father watched for him. He was undoubtedly hoping and praying for the return of his son. Perhaps he just had the faith that the son would come home.
And then one day here comes the son and his father sees him from afar. He didn't just walk, he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and hugged him. What a reunion that must have been. So much so that his father told his servants to bring the best robe to put on him, and to put a ring on his finger. And then kill a calf so that they could celebrate. For his son that had been lost, had been found again!
His dad was truly happy and excited that his son had come home. Mercy and forgiveness did not even seem a question for him. He loved him too much to hold any grudges.
What a picture of redemption that was?
But what about his other son? Was he happy that his brother had returned? Did he forgive him as dad had? Or was he angry and jealous about all the attention that his brother was getting?
Come back tomorrow for part 2 of this story.
